Cloud Migration Guide for your Business
Businesses need to remain competitive if they are to grow and take market share. Never has Technology been so critical for this to be achieved and if Technology is not seen as a key strategic enabler across your C-Suite, then perhaps you need to review this mindset.
Digital transformation may appear to be the latest buzz word amongst corporate businesses, but it needs to be looked at regardless of your company size.
Modern and innovative technology solutions must be adopted within your company if you want to deliver your business strategy. The ability to do this means you will have to review the need for Cloud technology.
Gartner recently revealed that by 2022, over 60 percent of businesses worldwide will adopt Cloud services. With such staggering growth, it is no wonder that the majority of vendors are making their solutions cloud-native.
What is Cloud Migration?
Cloud migration is the process of moving from one cloud technology platform to another. This will likely mean moving from on-prem infrastructure to a public or private cloud for first-time cloud users.
Having a cloud migration strategy and plan ensures that you understand the process and activity that needs to be performed in order to be successful.
Whether you are going to Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), or Google Cloud; having visibility of the tools and processes that you need to follow can be the difference between success and failure.
Why Do I need to migrate to the Cloud?
The need to migrate from the Cloud can be due to technology change, cost savings, agility, performance, capacity, or merely adopting services quicker.
A cloud strategy is nearly always an IT strategy based on principles that the business signs up to. It is then up to the Technology team to select and migrate servers as and when needed.
Do I need a Cloud Migration checklist?
The overall cloud migration approach will be based on your requirements and as such it will be defined by going through a checklist of information.
To get to that position you should be working across the business users and thinking about the following
> What is the purpose of the cloud move
> Which applications or services will be impacted.
> How are the services accessed, and how will they be accessed
> Will you need to provide access from any device and location
> How will the platform be secured
> What Technology is being migrated, and is there any transformation elements
> How will you move the data, and will there be any security impact
> Who are the migration architect and operational team
> Will the cloud model be full or hybrid
> What will your KPI’s be to measure success
> What will be the data migration plan
> How will you test all or parts to determine its fully operational
> What management and alerting will you put in place
> Do you need the help of a Cloud Service Provider or IT Managed Support Company
> Will you need to develop a Devops capability
> Do you need to upskill your IT team
The above are all questions that can help shape and influence cloud migration. Whilst it’s not a comprehensive list, it covers the key questions that need to be asked to create a successful migration path.
