What is Passwordless Authentication and How Can It Keep My Business Secure

As the digital world continues to move forward and our lives transfer online, cybersecurity services and safety have become increasingly critical.

All of our personal information is at constant risk of cyber attack, which is why solid passwords and managed IT support are a necessity.

We’ve always been told to create complex passwords utilising various symbols, numbers, and cases to protect ourselves better, but most individuals and businesses maintain simple codes instead for easy use.

It can be challenging to memorise all of the passwords you need in your day-to-day routine. Many people use the same log-in information for multiple accounts, which weakens their security system and puts them at risk for hacking.

Keeping track of your passwords and protecting your information is of the utmost importance, though.

What is Passwordless Authentication?

Passwordless authentication is a method that enables you to access secure sites and accounts without needing to input your log-in details for every single one.

There are multiple types of authentication methods that cybersecurity services use, often combining them with Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and SSO to improve user experience and safety without increasing the IT departments’ complexity.

One of the most common forms of authentications is the Single Sign-On Solutions (SSO).

You can access all of your accounts with only one log-in. You’ve most likely experienced these types of sign-on for various websites and applications. Whenever a site asks you to sign in with a username and password or with your Google or Facebook account, they’re employing an SSO. It allows for much easier access.

As long as you’re logged into your email or social media page, it will connect seamlessly to your other accounts as well. You won’t need to remember multiple passwords to prove your identity. It isn’t precisely a passwordless authentication, though, since you still need to have the log-in details to your initial account for it to function correctly.

However, it significantly cuts back on the number of usernames and passwords you need to have memorised. The system can handle all of that information for you.

Passwordless authentications are commonly seen as biometric identifications. Face or TouchID are growing increasingly commonplace in cybersecurity, as they add an extra form of protection that someone can’t hack while also allowing easier use. It’s much quicker for users to log in with their fingerprint than type out a long and complicated password. Second Factor

Authentication is also frequently used, where it sends a code to your email or through text message for you to input directly into the site.

Digital keys can be found in various forms, such as on a USB stick or directly downloaded onto your smartphone device. South Korea has been using these types of password authentications for many years to protect against online threats. Many applications require that you download a certification onto a USB stick, which you then plug in whenever you want to access that specific locked software. The drive and certificate serve as your password.

How is Passwordless Authentication Safer?

Regular passwords are notoriously insecure forms of online protection. It is easy for someone to hack into an account, thanks to the various decoder software and weak passwords people create. How many platforms do you operate that use the same kind of password simply because it’s easier to remember and you’ve been using it for years?

People have a difficult time remembering complex passwords, so they prefer to use the same simple one over and over again repeatedly. There is a considerable risk when dealing with standard passwords, especially when you don’t create complex ones.

Compromised passwords are incredibly dangerous for individuals and businesses alike. Think how many celebrity iCloud accounts were hacked over the years due to weak security. Phishing attacks and scams are also on the rise and occur much more frequently when your passwords are simple, like password123 or your birthdate.

Scammers can easily trick you into giving your information away, so passwordless or multi-factor authentication is crucial for developing a more substantial security form.

SSOs make your log-in more secure than regular passwords because you can have a wide variety of strong passwords for each account without needing to memorise any of them. As long as you have your main account details, you can easily access the rest of them. This makes it much more likely that you’ll skip the easy log-in for a more complicated one, ensuring your online protection.

Fingerprint scans or FaceID are becoming more advanced and strengthening their security against hackers. Facial recognition reaches the point where it can recognise whether your identity is accurate after you blink and move your head from side to side. Second-factor authentication is also much more secure than normal sign-ins because you need to have your phone on hand to receive the code in a text message, making it harder for someone to breach your account.

These methods will always be more secure than a simple 8-letter password.

Why Does Your Business Need Passwordless Authentication?

Passwordless authentication can reduce the chances of a cyber-attack occurring against your business. It protects your company from information breaches, identity theft, and phishing scams.

Using this method of secure log-in makes operations easier for your entire administration. Your employees won’t have to remember dozens of log-in details, while your IT department won’t have to reset and maintain passwords constantly. Everything becomes more automated and saves your business time and energy, streamlining your employees’ productivity and efficiency.

It is best to set up an SSO for your business, so your employees can access various sites and applications without needing to memorise complex usernames and passwords. Use either a traditional sign-in system or utilise a biometric one. It will make their work more manageable, and you’ll have greater control over your security when you focus on using dedicated access codes.

Remember that these systems and methods are not impenetrable. Although they are much stronger than standard passwords, hackers will always try to steal your information. SSOs and biometrics might hinder them now, but they’ll find other ways to steal your codes and break down your firewalls. IT and cybersecurity are constantly evolving and improving, but so are the scammers. As both an individual and a business, you should work toward protecting yourself and your information at all times.

Passwordless authentication is the next step towards a safer technology and should be utilised alongside your regular passwords to protect your details.

We hope this blog post has made you aware of the benefits of passwordless authentication and how it can streamline your user’s access and authentication
