Why does my Business need a Disaster Recovery Plan?
For your Business to operate and grow, it relies on a few critical elements: assets, data, and people. As long as these three things are present and operational, the Business can flourish and function.
But what happens when some or all of these things suffer an issue? What happens if they are not available? How would your Business operate and work?
This is where a Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) comes in. Suppose you ever have the misfortune of suffering a severe outage or impact to the Business and that hinders your capability; what would you do? .
A DRP would contain a set of processes and guidelines that you could follow that would essentially allow your Business to continue whilst the incident was addressed.
What types of incidents would benefit from a Disaster Recovery Plan?
1. Business suffers Cybercrime \ Cyberattack: Cyber attacks are on the increase and are only going to worsen. They can be difficult to identify and do required skilled people to assess and analyse what has happened.
Whilst User awareness and training is key to reduce risks, the likelihood of an attack being successful is still high. Why? As zero-day attacks are becoming ever too common so you need to prepare yourself of this eventuality.
2. Employee error: Very common, and its safe to say that our Users can be our strongest defence but also our weakest link.
Accidental deletion, losing devices, losing USB drives, sending the wrong emails, clicking on the wrong link can all be things that a user can inadvertently do. But the impact of these actions can be devastating.
3. Systems failure: Hardware and software is fallible. It can fail without warning and can have a significant impact to your business. Being able to prepare for this event is key to ensuring you can limit its impact. a DRP will enable your business to operate by deferring to an alternate system and so business continuity can be delivered.
The above are just some examples of events that could benefit from a DRP. Being prepared and having a communicated response is the key part here.
You must take the view that your business WILL suffer from an event that will have serious impact to your business. Taking this approach will enable you to prepare and recover from such incidents.
