An IT Strategy outlines how technology will help deliver the Business’s goals and growth. It aims to capture all the processes, functions and KPIs’ that can then help define what needs to be done and when.
The vision and plan are critical in the IT strategy as it sets the overlying scope and direction that every employee will work to.
A business strategy defines the overall goals and lays the construct for how to achieve them. The IT Strategy is similar in that it focuses on IT to enable the business strategy’s delivery.
Be iterative: As markets change, so do businesses. All strategies must be iterative by nature and be able to change based on circumstances.
Be aligned: IT is one part of the Business. The likes of Finance, HR, Sales, Marketing are all functions that make up the Business. IT will sit across all of them as an enabling factor.
Be documented and measurable: The IT Strategy must be documented so that everyone in your company can see it. The people, process, principles, and technology will call out various business areas that must be involved and engaged in optimising the overall growth.
The IT Strategy can be started by answering some questions within and across your Business. The answers to those questions would then drive out some of the key principles and decisions.
Does your IT support and facilitate business needs?
Are employees happy about the use of technology in the Business?
Is IT properly managed in the company and do users get the right level of IT support?
Does IT add value to the current business strategy?
How much does your IT cost, and does it provide value for money?
How is Cybersecurity dealt with in your company, and does every user understand what the Cybersecurity policy is?
What would you do in the event of an IT outage?
What is the current BCP and DR policy, and when was the last time it was invoked?
What is the company’s IT vision?
Is all of your data backed up?
How secure is your IT infrastructure?
All of the above are searching questions that you must answer to formulate a robust IT strategy.
