Backup is a process that forms part of an overall backup strategy or policy. its aim is to ensure that a copy of your data is taken and kept in another location, ready to be called upon if it ever needs to be recovered.
Data is prone to accidental or malicious action, so recovering from such events will ensure business continuity.
Your business requirements will determine what sort of backup strategy you need. Are you in an industry that is heavily regulated and has several compliance commitments? Do you need to have aggressive RPO and RTO’s? What is your business’s impact if your data or systems are down for 1 hour, 4 hours and 12 hours? All of these questions will help shape your overall backup strategy.
There are some principles which everyone should think about adopting and these can be summarised as;
Backup frequency: At the very minimum, you should perform a daily backup where Day 1 is a full back and days 2 to 7 are Incremental. This cycle then repeats itself, and you can then archive a weekly or monthly backup for retention purposes.
Backup Security: Make sure your backups are encrypted to AES256 so that they are useless to someone without decryption
Backup Availability: Once a backup has completed, it is critical to copy it to another location so that you can recover from any local outages.
Backup Anti-Virus: Ensure that your backup solution has the anti-malware capability. This will ensure that should they ever get compromised, then ransomware will not encrypt the data.
Backup Alerting: Assuming a backup will run and complete without issue is wishful thinking; having an operational process whereby backup jobs are monitored on the start and finish is very important.
